What is Oil Pulling?

I have always known that oils are good for the skin and more recently coconut oil has been talked about non-stop in the beauty industry for it’s multi-purpose uses. Well, I just found out about something called “oil pulling” and was intrigued on what it actually was, so I decided to research it and find out. 

Oil Pulling also known as “kavala” or “gundusha” is an ancient Ayurvedic dental technique that involves swishing 1 tablespoon of oil in your mouth on an empty stomach for twenty minutes. The oil draws out toxins in your body, and not only will improve oral health but the entire body as well.

Apparently oil pulling has been around for hundreds of years and is an ancient folk remedy. By swishing the coconut oil in your mouth it whitens the teeth, prevents cavities, gives you better breath, helps you sleep, and relieves headaches. You can honestly use any oil but coconut oil is the most recommended because it can do much more than other oils. 

The oil will double in size as you swish it in your mouth so you should start with half of a tablespoon first to get used to the texture. Make sure you spit the oil into a trash can or outside considering the liquid mush could clog your pipes. Doctors say that coconut oil naturally makes a great mouthwash because it is organic and contains a lot of Vitamin E which acts as an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal antioxidant.
